Recovery From Hysterectomy

The speed of recovery after hysterectomy can differ among patients. The hysterectomy recovery period will basically depend on the type of hysterectomy performed, as well as the technique used for performing the surgery.

Recovery after hysterectomy is longer if it is done through abdominal surgery than laparoscopy. Abdominal surgery which is usually done due to cancer requires the removal of the uterus and other organs such as the ovaries. While laparoscopy is only done through a small incision in the abdomen which heals after only few days. Much more than the physical healing, is the psychological and emotional recovery which sometimes take even longer period.

Hysterectomy patients can usually go home within forty-eight hours of the surgery. Patients who underwent a laparoscopically assisted hysterectomy can go back to their normal activities within two weeks, while patients who underwent an abdominal hysterectomy may need a hysterectomy recovery period of six to eight weeks because of the size of the incision.

Here are the things you should do during hysterectomy recovery period:

Take prescribed pain killers.

Do not move too much.

Do move slowly.

If excessive blood or pus is coming from the incision, ask your doctor immediately.

Do use heating pads. However, do not sleep with the heating pads in direct contact with your skin.

Refrain from bending too much.

Avoid taking in aspirins.

Do refrain from eating dairy food.

Eat healthy and regularly.

Take complete vitamins.

Drinks lots of water.

On the other hand, here are some don’ts when you’re undergoing recovery after hysterectomy:

Unless advised by the doctors, do not resume sexual activity.

Do not lift things that weigh ten pounds or more for at least six weeks after the surgery.

Do not bathe in bath tubs or swim after the surgery for at least six weeks.

Do not be in a hurry to resume regular activities such as doing house chores.

Do not drive until given permission by your doctor.

Do not climb through stair right away.

Do not drink alcoholic beverages in excess.
