The Myth Of Using Laxatives To Lose Weight

It’s commendable that over half the people in this country would like to lose weight. And too many of those people think there’s a shortcut or a magic pill that can help them shed weight without modifying their diet or lifestyle. One of the most abused shortcuts is using laxatives to lose weight. Unfortunately, the reasoning behind this method is completely faulty.

Laxatives do not work on the foods one consumes. What laxatives do is stimulate the bowel, which just puts you in some physical pain and gives the sensation of needing a restroom. Matter is often expelled under force because of these cramps. But most of what is expelled is water, not fat. It might seem like someone has lost two or three pounds using laxatives, but as soon as they quit taking them, they put back on the weight as soon as they’re hydrated again.

There is also a wide array of health risks associated with excessive laxative use. It can become impossible for a person to have a regular bowel movement without the aid of a laxative. The rectum is forcing out waste, it can often suffer skin tearing, which causes bleeding and the risk of infection that is caused by waste coming in contact with the open tears around the rectal area. A person can become severely weak and dehydrated, which will inhibit their ability to function.

Many have claimed that laxatives not only speed up weight loss, but help people keep the weight off. Either they are lying, or they don’t know the facts. In actuality, the use of laxatives as a means of weight loss is a form of eating disorder along the same lines as bulimia. The only real difference between bulimia and using laxatives for weight loss is that bulimics force themselves to vomit their food up and use laxatives to eliminate anything that remains, while those who use laxatives follow a milder method do not usually make themselves vomit.

In some cases, however, laxative use for an extended amount of time can make a person feel sick and eventually vomit. Medical help likely would be necessary to wean a long-term laxative abuser, and if fortunate, potentially correct any damage.

There are those people who may say that using laxatives is a fast way to lose weight. These people are actually spreading a lie that will hurt the well-being of anyone who thinks that abuse of laxatives or any other medication is a smart way to reach a weight loss goal.
