Munich is the third largest city in Germany by size and is the capital of Bavaria. Munich has a striking setting on the banks of the river Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. The architecture of the city is delightfully old and has the latest high rise which is symbolized by the BMW headquarters building. The two royal palaces, the Nymphenburg and the Oberschleiheim are good-looking examples of the magnificence of the past. Several parts of the palaces now serve as museums and the grounds as parks.

There are plenty of paces to visit and things to do in Munich. If by chance a visitor comes to Munich in the beginning of October, then he or she will get caught up in the preparations for the October festival. The October festival is celebrated, and it is more a beer drinking competition where the major beer making companies setup huge tents and beer in huge liter mugs is served. Beer is only served to those who are seated and to find a seat one needs to get into a tent before 10 am. The festival can however be quite stressful.

There is theater, opera, and music in Munich for those who enjoy watching or listening to a superior theatrical performance. The Residenztheater hosts a selection of classical and recent plays. At the Nationaltheater, there are daily ballet or opera shows. The Kammerspiele can astonish the audience with fresh interpretations of famed plays.

There are a number of museums, galleries and memorials to visit in Munich. The Dachau concentration camp memorial site is a sobering reminder of the horrors of the past, and it is thus not recommended to take small children there. The Deutsches Museum is one of the world’s largest technical museums. For car lovers, the BMW museum is a must see museum.

For chilling and walking around, there are quite a few parks and gardens in Munich. There is also an extremely large zoo, in fact one of the main zoos in the world where animals can be observed wandering in their natural habitats. Even if you’re not a zoo person you will still take pleasure in walking around this zoo.

If you are a sports aficionado and have never seen the Olympics, then make a trip to the Olympic village where the 1972 summer Olympics were organized. There are numerous universities in Munich that teach applied science, arts, and business studies.

There are two markets and many shopping centers for people who like to shop. The markets have fresh vegetables, meat and fish, and many varieties of fruit that you can buy.

Eating in Munich is an indulgence particularly the extraordinary Bavarian breakfast which is served till noon! If you have missed the October festival there is still lots of bars from where you can flavor the well-known beers that are made in the breweries in Munich.

Munich is a great city to go to at anytime of the year as it is very energetic, and there is always a lot to do and discover over here.
