The Many Sides Of Area Rugs
One of the reasons why people the world over love area rugs is that they display a rare combination of functionality and visual appeal in a single item. You can express quite a lot of your tastes and personality with a single choice of area rug. And because the market runs the whole gamut of colors, textures, sizes and designs, you are sure to be able to find one no matter what you’re looking for.
Because they are so visually commanding, the appearance and design of an area rug can say much about the owner. Simple neutral rugs, for example, suggest a person that is clean and organized, and expects the home to be the same. Pieces with more color and fanciful designs, on the other hand, could suggest an artistic owner who gives in to whims and caprice. Whether you want to express an opinion or make a point about a personality, you can do so quite effectively with an area rug.
Another significant quality about area rugs is their ability to also appeal to the touch and not just to the sight. When we feel a lush and soft fabric cushioning our tired feet, we instantly feel relaxed. Cooking meals and washing the dishes is made more pleasurable with a comforting rug on the kitchen floor. So is getting inside the house with a bad weather made less dreadful with an area rug by the porch or entryway to deter the water, dirt or soil from staining our indoor floors.
Designers like to turn rugs into major decor pieces because they are so versatile and easy to work with. A single rug can work with several different themes and serve other purposes besides. One big reason that designers tend to favor rugs is that they can easily define one region of a room from another. The kids’ play area, for example, could have a rug that’s drastically different from the one in the dining room. This makes them distinct, even when they are both in the same continuous space. It is handy when you want to use a single small space for several different areas or functions.
I love area rugs as a hardwood floor cover. Decorative-wise, a brightly-colored area rug is an impressive contrast, an eye-catching piece when placed on a dark floor. Same is true with an area rug with an ornate pattern in the center of a hardwood floor. At the same time, it softens the noise that hardwood flooring emits from the footsteps, especially from my high-heeled shoes. Polishing the wooden floor is also made easier with little or no scratches as the floor is protected by the area rug.
At the same time, rugs can also act as a safety feature. The soft surface and the great traction help minimize injuries and accidents. Rugs are thus a very useful addition, especially in places like the kids’ rooms where hard surfaces should be minimized. They also help keep furniture like tables and couches in place.
Versatility, practicality and attractiveness are just some of the advantages of using area rugs in the home. They look like they are very simple items, but they actually serve a wide variety of functions. Once you discover just how useful and visually appealing area rugs can be, they are sure to become items that you will never want your house to be without.
