The Significance Of Rites In A Buddhists Funeral

The fundamental teachings of Lord Buddha form the core of the Buddhist religion which is practised extensively in several nations of the world today. Buddhism involves quest for the Ultimate Truth as well as a spirit of compassion and genuine love for every living being.

Buddhist funeral rites are also based upon these basic principles of the religion. After a person dies in a Buddhist family, some rituals have to be practised in order to make sure that the deceased’s soul is elevated to a higher stage in afterlife. Prayers are made calling upon the positive energies of the deceased for his or her deliverance from this cycle of life.

The first task in funeral rites is that of giving a traditional wash to the body. The next stage involves presence of monks, who chant from religious scriptures and thereby help the soul in finding liberation. The teachings of the Buddha, which speak of the value of goodness and compassion in life, are read aloud. Meanwhile, the body is prepared for the final rites. Friends and family often keep some money in the casket of the dead person. This is believed to help the deceased cross the River of Three Hells to reach his ultimate destination.

Then the casket is displayed to the family and friends to allow them to pay their final respects by putting it at the altar. Visitors are expected to pray for the deceased and the family and friends give their condolences. Monks who perform the rituals continue to recite the appropriate sutras. After the chanting is over, people attending the ceremony bow at the altar. As the visitors start leaving, the family members give a gift to each other to display gratitude for sharing their sorrow.

After these rituals are carried out, the deceased may then be either buried or cremated in accordance with the beliefs of the family. The rites and rituals are a means of bringing peace to the family members of the departed as they know their prayers are directed towards elevating the status of the departed in his life after death.
